General Christopher Musa, the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), has urged Nigerians to exercise civility and peace while exercising their rights, amid ongoing nationwide protests against hunger and bad governance.
During a press briefing in Abuja on Friday, General Musa warned against individuals using the protests as a cover for violence.He commended the professionalism of security operatives, particularly the police, in handling the protests. “The government has upheld its promise of allowing people to associate freely. The security forces, especially the Nigerian police, have shown exemplary professionalism,” said General Musa.
He emphasized the difference between peaceful protest and criminality, urging citizens to understand and respect this distinction.General Musa highlighted the government’s efforts to address the economic situation, calling on Nigerians to hold local and state governments accountable.
He also noted improvements in economic and security policies, expressing confidence that with collective support, the nation could achieve peace and economic growth. General Musa shared his recent visit to the Niger Delta aimed at boosting production to fund the economy.Addressing those planning to incite violence, General Musa made it clear that the military would not stand by and watch the country descend into chaos. He stated that while the military would exercise professionalism, they would ensure that anyone caught causing trouble would face legal consequences.
He also appealed to the media to avoid sensationalizing the protests, noting that some individuals seek attention through such coverage.
General Musa concluded by urging all levels of government and citizens to work together to avoid further destruction and chaos.
