This, she said could be achieved through awareness, regular screening and advocacy from health providers.
The president of the Lagos State Chapter of Medical Women Association Of Nigeria Dr Mrs Funmi Ige, also delivered the keynote address addressing the fight against Breast Cancer and encouraging healthy practices and avoiding fake drugs as a measure also.
The five-day event held in collaboration with key healthcare institutions including the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), The Lakeshore Centre, Gifted Hands Medical Centre, and The American Hospitals. Together, they offered a comprehensive package of breast cancer services. The event included free breast cancer screening, one-on-one counselling, referrals for further care, and efforts to demystify the myths and misconceptions surrounding breast cancer, particularly the belief that a diagnosis equates to a death sentence.
Phlox Health Foundation’s campaign is driven by the goal of making essential healthcare services accessible to all women, particularly those who may otherwise not have the financial means to afford regular screening and early detection. By offering these services at no cost, the organization seeks to emphasize the importance of early detection, which significantly increases the chances of successful treatment and survival.
A representative of Phlox Health Foundation commented on the campaign’s broader impact, citing deep commitment to ensuring that women have access to essential health services like breast cancer screening. Also, to dispel the fear surrounding cancer and show that early detection can save lives.
In addition to screening and medical consultations, the campaign focuses on public health education. Sessions will be held to provide attendees with factual information about breast cancer, emphasizing that with the right treatment and timely intervention, patients can recover and live healthy lives. The campaign also seeks to highlight the critical role of awareness in reducing breast cancer mortality rates.
Phlox Health Foundation, a non-governmental organization dedicated to improving access to healthcare, water, sanitation, hygiene, and education, has long championed initiatives that support marginalized communities. Through this breast cancer awareness campaign, the foundation reaffirms its mission to bridge gaps in healthcare accessibility and to foster a more informed and proactive approach to personal health.
Supporting this outreach is Wash 94.9 FM, the health-centric radio station, which is a part of Phlox Health Foundation. The station serves as the foundation’s primary media platform, promoting the importance of good health practices, wholesome lifestyles, and quality of life. Throughout the breast cancer campaign, Wash FM will be airing interviews with health experts, survivor stories, and educational content to further raise awareness about breast cancer and its implications.
With such efforts, Phlox Health Foundation hopes to not only provide immediate medical services but also spark a long-term change in public attitudes towards breast cancer, emphasizing the role of regular check-ups and early intervention in combating the disease.
The free screening sessions held at the Foundation’s office in Lagos, with specific attention to underserved communities. For women attending the screenings, there will be additional support for follow-up appointments and referrals where necessary.
Women from all walks of life are encouraged to take advantage of this opportunity and play an active role in their health.
