The West African Examinations Council (WAEC), Nigeria, has firmly denied circulating reports that it has canceled the 2025 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for School Candidates.
A viral press statement that emerged on social media on Saturday, July 19, alleged that the Federal Ministry of Education, in collaboration with WAEC, had nullified the recently concluded examinations due to widespread malpractice, question paper leaks, and unauthorized digital dissemination of exam materials.
However, WAEC in an official statement released on Sunday, July 20, 2025, described the claim as “spurious” and said it did not originate from the Council.
“The said examination has not been cancelled,” WAEC stated. “The source of the false information remains unverified, but we are confident that it is the work of mischief-makers bent on tarnishing the Council’s image and causing panic among candidates.”
WAEC also disclosed that the marking of scripts has already been completed and that the 2025 WASSCE results will be officially released on or before Thursday, August 4, 2025.
The Council reiterated that any official communication from WAEC will always be disseminated through its verified social media accounts and recognized media platforms nationwide. It also emphasized that all genuine press releases are issued and signed by the Public Affairs Department on behalf of the Head of National Office.
WAEC urged members of the public, stakeholders, and candidates to disregard the false information and await authentic updates directly from the Council.
