The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has officially released the corrected results of the 2025 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for school candidates, days after it suspended result access due to a technical error.
In a statement released by the Acting Head of Public Affairs, Moyosola Adesina, the Council explained that the problem arose from an error in the grading of the English Language Objective Paper, caused by a wrongly assigned serialized code file. This, WAEC noted, affected the performance statistics earlier announced on August 4, 2025. Candidates who sat for the computer-based mode were not affected.
Following an internal review, WAEC corrected the error and reopened its online result portal for candidates to check their updated scores. The Council described the incident as “deeply regrettable” and apologised to candidates, parents and stakeholders for the inconvenience and emotional stress it caused.
According to the Head of the Nigeria National Office, Dr. Amos Josiah Dangut, the reviewed results show a significant improvement from the earlier figures. Out of 1,969,313 candidates who sat for the examination:
1,794,821 candidates (91.14%) obtained credit and above in a minimum of five subjects (with or without English and/or Mathematics).
1,239,884 candidates (62.96%) obtained credits and above in at least five subjects including English Language and Mathematics.
Female candidates (53.05%) outperformed male candidates (46.95%) in this key category.
WAEC also reported that 191,053 results (9.7%) remain withheld due to suspected examination malpractice, which is currently under investigation.
Dr. Dangut assured the public that WAEC has learned from the incident and is putting measures in place to prevent a recurrence, stressing that the Council remains committed to fairness, transparency and excellence in its examinations.
Candidates who have met all financial obligations to WAEC can now check their results via www.waecdirect.org and apply for their digital certificates, which will be available within 48 hours. Hard copies of certificates will be ready in about 90 days.
WAEC also appealed to state governments owing the Council to settle their debts promptly so that affected schools and candidates can access their results without delay.
With the correction completed, WAEC says it is moving forward with its mission to uphold integrity and trust in its examination process while safeguarding the credibility of the Nigerian education system.
