Lagos State Deputy Governor, Dr. Kadri Obafemi Hamzat, has emphasized the need to synergize and strengthen strategic partnerships with social and recreational clubs across the state, particularly the Lagos Country Club, ostensibly to expand opportunities for quality relaxation, physical exercise, and therapeutic well-being for Lagosians.
The Deputy Governor made this known on Tuesday while receiving the President of the Lagos Country Club, Mr. Oluseyi Adewunmi, during a courtesy visit to the Deputy Governor’s Office, Roundhouse, Alausa, Ikeja. He noted that the Club plays a vital role in promoting the social and physical well-being of residents.
His words, “We cannot just be working; we must also find time to de-stress, meet friends, and connect with colleagues. The role that clubs play is key because social balance is very important. What you do for society is extremely significant, and we must continue to encourage it.”
Dr. Hamzat further recalled that the state government had made it mandatory for all members of the Executive Council to join at least one or two clubs, explaining that this policy has enabled government officials to collaborate more effectively with social clubs for sensitization and information dissemination to citizens.
He added that the Club’s forthcoming 72nd Anniversary presents another opportunity for the state government to engage with members on the ongoing initiatives and the challenges faced in governance.
The Deputy Governor also expressed concern over the rising challenge of drug addiction among young people in the state. “It is a major problem we are confronting in our schools and communities. How do we get societies to support us? How do we engage parents? We have realized that parents have a major role to play,” he stressed.
He also noted that another challenge facing the government officials is the limited time available for strategic thinking, observing that even past American presidents had publicly lamented similar constraints.
Earlier in his remarks, the President, Lagos Country Club, Mr. Oluseyi Adewunmi, sought the government’s support in strengthening the activities of the Club, which he described as an important contributor to nation-building.
“We are here to request deeper support and partnership for our Club’s activities, particularly in the area of exercise. The average Lagos resident works throughout the day and needs a place to unwind in the evening. Our Club provides that space for relaxation and relief from the hustle and bustle of daily life,” he stated.
Mr. Adewunmi further disclosed that the Club will celebrate its 72nd Anniversary and host its elders on December 1st, noting that these elders have served the Club with distinction and that their legacies must be preserved. “It is important for us to bring them together and reflect on their contributions to the Club,” he concluded.
