In a season often defined by excess and fleeting generosity, the Elumelu family has chosen a quieter, more enduring path; one rooted in empathy, continuity and community responsibility. This yuletide, the family extended a wide reaching humanitarian outreach across Lagos, Delta and Edo States, reinforcing a philosophy that giving should be intentional, personal and sustained beyond festive symbolism.

At the heart of this year’s outreach was a visit to the Hearts of Gold Children’s Hospice in Surulere, Lagos, where the family spent time with children receiving palliative and specialized care. Speaking with the Chairperson of Avon Healthcare Limited, Dr Awele Elumelu, she said that her family had a moral duty of care to reach out to children without parental care or at the risk of losing parental care. They also believe in supporting families to strengthen them especially those who lack accessibility to funds for daily living.

The setting underscored the central focus of the initiative which is restoring dignity, offering comfort and addressing real human needs, particularly among the most vulnerable. In response, the Founder of Hearts of Gold Children’s Hospice, Mrs Laja Adedoyin expressed appreciation to the Elumelu family for their continued support, noting that the assistance received earlier in the year had helped the hospice remain operational despite rising costs.

The Elumelu family’s outreach is not framed as seasonal charity but as a shared family culture, one deliberately passed down across generations. Their children, actively involved in the initiative, have grown into a tradition of compassion that recognizes access to healthcare, food and basic necessities as fundamental human concerns rather than privileges reserved for a few.

For nearly three years, the outreach has steadily supported underserved families and institutions, with a strong emphasis on communities that have played defining roles in the family’s personal and professional journey. Onicha-Uku in Delta State, central to their upbringing, alongside Edo and Lagos States, where education and professional life took shape, remain focal points of the initiative.

The approach is deeply relational, anchored in gratitude to places that helped shape their values and worldview.

This year’s outreach extended to a diverse range of beneficiaries, including the FMC School of Nursing in Onicha-Uku, the NYSC Camp in the same community; orphanages visited include Hearts of Gold Children’s Hospice Surulere, Little saints orphanage Surulere, Sos children’s village Isolo, Living fountain orphanage, Adiel Children’s Home Ilupeju and Compassionate Orphanage, Egbeda. The orphanage homes and all beneficiaries thanked and appreciated the Elumelu family for their good will and the kindness they have imbibed to reach out to those who genuinely in need of upliftment.

In tangible terms, the scale of the intervention was significant. A total of 1,730 bags of rice and 290 bags of beans, alongside other essential items, were distributed across Lagos, Delta and Edo States. Yet the true impact went beyond numbers. For many recipients, the outreach represented not just relief from economic strain, but reassurance of acknowledgment that they are seen, remembered and valued.

At a time when rising living costs continue to erode household stability for millions of Nigerians, initiatives like this carry added weight. They serve as reminders that private citizens and families, not just institutions, can play meaningful roles in strengthening social safety nets.

Dr. Awele Elumelu, stated that her family’s outreach stands as a model of understated philanthropy. One that resists spectacle, prioritizes consistency and roots generosity in lived connection.
