The Nigerian Army has firmly rejected online claims suggesting growing discontent within its’ ranks over salaries and allowances, describing the reports as false, misleading and potentially harmful to national security.
The allegations, widely circulated on social media and online blogs, had claimed that soldiers were threatening mutiny due to welfare concerns.
In a statement released on Monday by the Acting Director of Army Public Relations, Colonel Appolonia Anele, the Army described the report as “deliberately sensational” and based on anonymous, unverifiable sources.
Colonel Anele stressed that there has been no threat of mutiny at any time, noting that mutiny remains a grave offence under military law and is fundamentally incompatible with the Nigerian Army’s long standing ethos of discipline, professionalism and loyalty to the Constitution and the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces.
The Army faulted the reliance on unnamed sources and non-official channels, emphasizing that Nigerian soldiers are trained to address grievances through established internal procedures rather than public platforms.
According to the statement, such narratives do not reflect the views or conduct of officers and personnel currently serving across various operational theatres.
Clarifying issues around remuneration, the Army noted that promotion increments represent only one element of military pay and should not be misconstrued as total earnings. Military compensation, it explained, consists of consolidated salaries, rank based allowances, operational and field allowances, hardship benefits and other entitlements that vary depending on deployment, qualifications and assigned responsibilities.
The statement further outlined ongoing welfare reforms being implemented in collaboration with the Armed Forces of Nigeria and relevant government agencies. These include periodic salary reviews, enhanced operational allowances, improved accommodation, expanded medical services and strengthened insurance coverage for troops and their families. Allowance related matters, the Army said, remain under continuous review within approved government frameworks.
Colonel Anele also disclosed that since assuming office, the Chief of Army Staff has engaged relevant authorities on troop welfare, with discussions already yielding progressive outcomes. She added that the Federal Government, under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, has consistently demonstrated commitment to the welfare and operational effectiveness of the Armed Forces, particularly amid evolving security challenges nationwide.
Reaffirming its institutional stability, the Nigerian Army described itself as a cohesive and disciplined force focused on its constitutional mandate of defending Nigeria’s sovereignty and supporting internal security operations. Attempts to portray the military as unstable or lawless, the statement warned, are not only irresponsible but also detrimental to national security.
The Army urged the public to disregard unfounded reports and rely on official communication channels for accurate information concerning the Armed Forces, particularly the Nigerian Army.
