IKORODU WEST CRACKS DOWN ON ILLEGAL WASTE DUMPING

The Ikorodu West Local Council Development Area (LCDA) has ordered the temporary closure of all business premises along the NBC Road corridor at Ebute Police Post Junction, Ipakodo, following repeated violations of environmental sanitation regulations and persistent illegal refuse dumping in the area.

In a statement released by the Media Unit, Office of the Executive Chairman, Ikorodu West LCDA, the council explained that the action followed multiple warnings, clean-up exercises and direct engagements with affected business operators, all of which failed to achieve compliance. The continued dumping was described as a direct risk to public health and environmental safety.
Council officials outlined a sequence of events that led to the enforcement.

On Tuesday, the Executive Chairman, Hon. (Otunba) Sulaimon Kazeem Olanrewaju, personally supervised the evacuation of refuse illegally dumped on the road median and engaged shop owners on the need to adopt proper waste disposal practices. Within hours, the refuse reappeared at the same location.
Further inspections on Wednesday and Thursday revealed repeated dumping despite additional cleanup, consultations with community leaders and a final warning issued to the operators. A Friday morning inspection again found the median littered with heaps of waste, confirming a sustained pattern of non-compliance.

Acting under the relevant provisions of Lagos State environmental laws, the Chairman directed the Environment Department to seal all affected business premises for a period of twenty days. The council said the measure was necessary to protect public health, enforce environmental discipline and deter future violations.
The Ikorodu West administration reaffirmed its commitment to environmental sustainability and community well being, urging residents and business owners to comply with sanitation laws, work with assigned PSP operators and support efforts to maintain a clean, safe and orderly environment.
