The College of Medicine (CMUL), University of Lagos (UNILAG), on Thursday inducted 28 medical laboratory scientists from the 2024/2025 graduating set.
Newsmen reports that seven graduates from the Medical Microbiology and Parasitology Unit made distinction while three graduated with pass.
The Chemical Pathology Unit produced three graduates with distinction, while six graduated with pass.
Newsmen also reports that one graduate had distinction in the Haematology and Blood Group Serology Unit, while two made pass.
Histopathology Unit produced one graduate with distinction and three graduates with pass.
Speaking at the induction ceremony tagged “9th Medical laboratory science induction and Awards”, in Lagos, the induction lecturer, Mr Felix Ofungwu, Chief Executive Officer of ISN Products Nigeria Ltd., said the theme, “Boosting Local Content Diagnostics through Robust and Sustainable Creativity”, was a call to action for graduating medical laboratory professionals.
Ofungwu, represented by Mrs Nkem Amah, Laboratory Operations Manager, said the inductees were entering the profession at one of the most demanding periods in healthcare history.
“You are not just laboratory staff. You are diagnostic decision-makers, quality assurance guardians, research enablers, public health defenders, innovation catalysts, and future industry leaders,” he said.
He challenged them to think beyond routine testing, ask better questions, embrace innovation and master innovative solutions.
Ofugwu also charged the graduands to uphold professional ethics, commit to life-long learning, and seek global best practices, while building local solutions.
He admonished them not to limit their dreams, saying some of them would become laboratory entrepreneurs, diagnostic innovators, research scientists, healthcare policymakers, industry leaders, and global experts.
Ofogwu told the inductees that the country needed their minds, skills, and courage as laboratory scientists.
On his part, Prof. Ademola Oremosu, Provost, CMUL, urged the inductees to make their blows count.
Oremosu, represented by the Deputy Provost, Prof. Daniel Odebiyi, said they needed to be purpose-driven, focused, and resilient in order to be successful in all their endeavours.
He therefore charged them to practise their new profession with passion.
“If you could do one thing to transform your life and career, I would highly recommend it be something you are passionate about.
“When you do what you love, you don’t feel like you are working anymore, as you derive pleasure from it,”he said.
Oremosu said by discovering one’s passion and leveraging one’s strengths, success would definitely follow.
“Be purpose-driven. Do not go about life aimlessly like a rudderless boat. Set worthwhile and realisable goals, and work not just hard but smart to achieve them.
“So, I charge you to make the greatest impact in your chosen career by being purpose-driven,” he said.
Dr Donald Ofili, Acting Registrar, Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria (MLSCN), who inducted the graduands into the medical laboratory science profession, charged them to uphold professional excellence.
Ofili further urged the inductees to uphold transparency and integrity in the discharge of their responsibilities, and to remain worthy ambassadors of the profession at all times.
Earlier, Prof. Abidemi Tella, Dean, Faculty of Health Professions, said that by the oath they were pledging to practise medical laboratory science with honesty, accuracy, and impartiality.
Tella added that the inductees were committing themselves to respecting the dignity of human life, maintaining confidentiality, and upholding professional secrecy.
She urged the inductees to let the oath guide their professional lives, reminding them that behind every specimen analysed is a human life that depends on their accuracy, diligence, and ethical judgement.
