The Nigerian Navy has launched Operation Awkward 2026, a harbour defence exercise aimed at testing operational readiness and strengthening Nigeria’s maritime security. Flagged off at Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) KADA in Apapa, Lagos, the exercise assesses personnel and equipment preparedness, identifies gaps, and refines strategies for effective maritime defence.
Rear Admiral Abdullahi Abubakar Mustapha, Flag Officer Commanding Western Naval Command, said the operation is part of the Navy’s effort to maintain a professional force, safeguarding critical assets and supporting national sovereignty. He noted that exercises like Operation Awkward provide a realistic platform for evaluating the Navy’s response capabilities, particularly in harbour environments with strategic infrastructure.
The exercise focuses on harbour defence operations in Lagos, involving coordinated boat operations by naval units from Apapa, Tarkwa Bay, and Badagry. Participants are urged to maintain high standards of discipline and professionalism.
Commodore Aiwuyor Adams-Aliu, Commander of NNS BEECROFT, said the exercise underscores the Navy’s commitment to continuous training and preparedness in a complex maritime environment.
