Nigeria and South Africa have strengthened their military cooperation to tackle emerging security threats. The Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, and the Chief of the South African Army, Lieutenant General Lawrence Khulekani Mbatha, met in Abuja to discuss ways to enhance regional security and professional military capacity.
The Nigerian Army has developed training frameworks to combat modern threats, including counter-terrorism and Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs). The two armies will expand collaboration in professional military education, capacity development, and technical cooperation, including aviation.
Lieutenant General Mbatha expressed interest in learning from Nigeria’s operational experiences in tackling terrorism and asymmetric threats. Both leaders agreed to sustain joint training, operational exchanges, and technical cooperation to promote stability and security in Africa.
