Lagos State Deputy Governor, Dr. Kadri Obafemi Hamzat, has urged young Nigerians to develop a clear sense of identity, build capacity, and actively participate in governance, saying self-awareness is the foundation for leadership and national development. He gave the charge today at a symposium organised by NYCN Lagos Chapter titled “2.0 Youth and Governance, Assembly edition & unveiling of NYCN Lagos Wards Champions,” themed “Building the Future of Governance through Youth Participation,” held at the University of Lagos, Akoka.
Dr. Hamzat said Lagos continues to expand economic opportunities for youth through initiatives like the Lagos State Employment Trust Fund, which has sustained thousands of jobs and supported SMEs. He stressed that while experience matters, the future belongs to the younger generation whose perspectives must shape policy. He added that government must build citizens’ economic capacity by equipping entrepreneurs with skills, and pushed for a system where no one under 18 is out of school or without vocational training. He also charged youths to reject drug abuse and urged NYCN Ward Champions to help build a society that secures a better future.
Other speakers backed the call for youth inclusion. Senator Idiat Adebule said youths are critical stakeholders and deserve sustained investment in education and skills. Lagos Assembly Deputy Speaker Mojisola Meranda said investing in youth development is an investment in the state’s stability and prosperity, urging young people to embrace leadership with competence and humility beyond elections. Commissioner Mobolaji Ogunlende and NYCN Lagos Chairman Engr. Ibrahim Adigun reaffirmed government and council commitment to youth empowerment through capacity building, entrepreneurship and civic engagement. The event ended with the unveiling of NYCN Lagos Ward Champions by the Deputy Governor.
