The Ogun State Police Command says it is strengthening non-kinetic policing in line with the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu’s focus on intelligence-led and community-driven strategies. Led by Commissioner of Police, CP Bode Ojajuni, the Command has launched targeted outreach programmes to keep youths away from cultism, drug abuse, cybercrime and other social vices.
As part of the drive, the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, spoke at the 8th Set Academic Seminar of Al-Hikmah University’s Mass Communication Department, Abeokuta Study Centre. In his paper, “Substance Abuse and National Insecurity: Building Responsible Youth Through Entrepreneurship,” he told students, lecturers and media practitioners that drug abuse fuels violent crimes like cultism, armed robbery and cyber fraud. He urged undergraduates to embrace entrepreneurship as a way to stay economically empowered and security-conscious, while calling on the media to promote responsible narratives.
In another engagement, the Ogun State chapter of the Police Campaign Against Cultism and Other Vices, POCACOV, coordinated by Deputy PPRO ASP Opeyemi Oluborode, partnered with Peace Club Abeokuta for the “Better Me Tournament.” Students from Olabisi Onabanjo University, FUNAAB and other institutions participated in interactive sessions on self-discipline, leadership and the dangers of gang life. The Command said enforcement will continue, but long-term safety depends on prevention through education and values. It appealed to schools, CSOs, parents and community leaders to work with the Police to steer young people toward productive lifestyles.
