ABEOKUTA — The Ogun State Police Command has called on Nigerian students to take an active role in national security, urging them to reject cultism, drug abuse, cybercrime and political violence as the country prepares for future elections.
Speaking at the 45th Students Parliamentary Council Summit of the Federal College of Education, Abeokuta, with the theme “From Campus to Nation: Mobilising for Peace, Security and Development,” the Command’s PPRO, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi said campuses are more than academic spaces — they are training grounds for leadership and citizenship. He warned that cult groups often prey on low self-esteem and the need for belonging, and advised students to build confidence through discipline and character instead. Babaseyi also cautioned against misuse of social media, urging students to “think before you post, verify before you share” to avoid spreading rumours and hate, and stressed the need for responsible, issue-based political engagement ahead of 2027.
The PPRO noted that the Nigeria Police Force under IGP Tunji Disu and the Ogun Command under CP Bode Ojajuni remain committed to protecting lives and property and ensuring a safe environment for learning. He, however, said effective policing depends on public cooperation. “See something, say something. Provide credible information and support lawful security initiatives,” he said. Babaseyi charged the students to make choices today that will shape the Nigeria of tomorrow, and expressed hope that the summit would produce young leaders committed to peace, integrity and nation-building.
