Oluwadamilare Adebowale Bashir, has called on young Lagosians to take a more active role in shaping the state’s political and civic landscape, stressing that meaningful change depends on their participation.
In a message directed at the youth, Bashir said democracy thrives when citizens are actively engaged, urging young people not to remain on the sidelines of governance. He encouraged them to contribute to civic discussions, policy debates and grassroots initiatives that influence decision-making at both local and national levels.
Bashir said that political change requires participation, he emphasized that the future of Lagos and Nigeria rests significantly in the hands of its’ younger population. According to him, disengagement among youths weakens democratic institutions, while active involvement strengthens accountability and fosters inclusive development.
He noted that beyond voting during elections, young people must consistently engage with governance processes by holding leaders accountable, proposing solutions to societal challenges and supporting community-driven projects. Such efforts, he said, help build a responsive system that reflects the needs and aspirations of the people.
Bashir also highlighted the growing role of digital platforms in shaping modern civic engagement, encouraging youths to use social media and other communication tools responsibly to advocate for policies, mobilize communities and promote constructive dialogue.
While acknowledging the frustrations many young Nigerians face, including economic pressures and limited opportunities, Bashir urged them to channel their energy into productive engagement rather than apathy. He stressed that sustainable progress requires a generation willing to take ownership of the democratic process.
He concluded by calling for a renewed sense of responsibility among young Lagosians, noting that their voices, ideas and actions remain critical to building a more inclusive, accountable and forward-looking society.
