The Electoral Act (Amendment) Bill 2021 has not received President Muhammadu Buhari’s signature.
The president stated in a letter to the Senate President, Ahmed Lawan, that the current situation in the country prevents him from signing the bill.

The president cited the high cost of holding direct primaries, the security challenges of election monitoring, violations of citizens’ rights, and the marginalization of small political parties as reasons for rejecting the bill.
Buhari stated that he had received informed advice from relevant government Ministries, Departments, and Agencies, as well as thoroughly reviewing the Bill in light of the current realities in the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

According to the president, it would be preferable if each political party was free to choose its own method of selecting election candidates.
