The Chief of Naval Staff (CNS), Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ikechukwu Ogalla, on Thursday 22nd August 2024, paid a condolence visit to the family of the late Lieutenant Commander Gideon Yashim Gwaza, who tragically lost his life on July 30, 2024.

Lieutenant Commander Gwaza was hailed for his heroic actions in rescuing 59 individuals from a near-drowning incident aboard the dredging vessel, MV AMBIKA 4, at the Okpobo River entrance. His bravery in leading the rescue operation ultimately cost him his life.

In a statement issued by the Director of Naval Information, Commodore A. Adams-Aliu, the late officer was praised as a committed and dedicated serviceman who consistently went above and beyond his call of duty.

During his visit, Vice Admiral Ogalla expressed heartfelt condolences to the widow and children of the late officer, urging them to find strength in the legacy of their fallen hero. He reassured them that the Nigerian Navy will continue to support the family, emphasizing that Gwaza’s sacrifice was deeply appreciated and will forever be honored by the service.

Accompanying the CNS on this solemn visit were Chief of Administration Rear Admiral Kennedy Ezete, Director of Veteran Affairs Rear Admiral M.Y. Dahiru, and the Commander of the Naval Unit, Commodore S.T. Lengaya. The visit, while somber, provided a source of comfort and encouragement to the grieving family.
