COAS FLAGS OFF DEVELOPMENT PROJECTS, URGES TROOPS TO UPHOLD CORE MILITARY VALUES

The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, on Wednesday 10th December 2025, commissioned a series of strategic development projects at the Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja Cantonment in Ikeja, Lagos, an infrastructure push designed to boost troop welfare and strengthen operational effectiveness across the 81 Division.

The newly unveiled facilities include a refurbished basketball court sponsored by First Bank, a remodeled Quarter Guard at the 9 Brigade Headquarters funded by Air Peace Airlines and the newly completed 9 Brigade Headquarters Complex, a project initiated and executed under the leadership of the immediate past Brigade Commander, Brigadier General Mathew Oyekola.

During the tour, the Army Chief also planted a commemorative tree within the barracks, a symbolic gesture underscoring the Nigerian Army’s commitment to environmental sustainability and its’ broader agenda of modernising military communities nationwide.

Lieutenant General Shaibu commended the corporate partners whose support made the projects possible, stressing that such collaborations remain vital in improving barracks facilities and enhancing the overall well being of personnel. He urged other stakeholders to emulate these contributions as the Army intensifies efforts to upgrade living and working conditions across its formations.

The COAS is currently on a two day operational visit to formations and units within the 81 Division’s Area of Responsibility, including Lagos and Ogun States.

While addressing troops of the 65 Battalion at Bonny Cantonment and personnel at the 81 Division Headquarters, the Army Chief delivered a concise but powerful charge. He praised the soldiers for maintaining peace and security across both states and highlighted the division’s commendable discipline record. He assured them that their welfare, spanning accommodation, allowances, healthcare and education for their children, remains a top priority for Army headquarters. Lt. Gen. Shaibu also applauded the division’s swift deployment to restore democratic order in the Republic of Benin, describing the operation as a testament to their professionalism and adherence to core military values.

As his visit continues, the COAS reiterated the Nigerian Army’s commitment to strengthening internal security, enhancing troop morale and ensuring that every soldier remains rooted in discipline, duty and the creed of service.
