BENIN CITY – THE 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) is expected to storm Benin City, the Edo State capital today (Tuesday) to mobilise voters for the governorship candidate of the party Olumide Akpata in the September 21 election.
Also expected in the state is the governor of Abia State Alex Oti to boost LP’s chances in the series of campaigns and mobilisation slated for the remaining days of the campaign.
Speaking to journalists in Benin on Monday, Akpata also shared his harrowing experiences crisscrossing the 18 local government areas of the state as an aspirant and now the candidate of the party.
He said it was the experience of hopelessness and alarming underdevelopment of many parts of the state to guided his manifesto which he said is a pact with the people of the state.
The Edo State is rich in terms of monthly allocations which are in billions and a huge debt of almost N600 billion but these have not been reflected in the development of the state.
He described the state of affairs in Edo State as a “desperate situation in need of serious intervention”, promising to turn things around for good and uplift the People’s living conditions.
He said from going around, they discovered that several communities across the state lack basic social amenities of life, citing Urhonigbe and Eme-Ora that have not had electricity for the last 10 and four years, respectively.
“The situation we saw is nightmare but this is the situation of the Edo people on a daily basis, the farmers are unable to evaluate their produce to the markets. The situation is not only in the hinterland, the approach to Benin City, the State capital, all the roads are a nightmare, flooding everywhere.
“The state of affairs I have presented is the misgovernance of the APC and PDP that have been in the helm of affairs of the state for the past 25 years”, he said.
He said poverty has been weaponized which has made politics monetized in the state and that contrary to claim by the state government of siting health centres in every ward of the state, “our visit showed the government fell short. “We have seen schools that are in such decrepit conditions”
The reported violence in campaigns involving the some parties in their campaigns Akpata said “In the course of our travel, we also have been victims of violence at Uhumora, the home of the Edo Speaker. Violence of any type, I abhor. These guys are not for the people, they are for themselves. If it is about the people, they can’t be killing themselves”, he said
