…AS 2025 HOS GAMES CONCLUDE
The Lagos State Deputy Governor, Dr. Kadri Obafemi Hamzat, has reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to the wellness and mental health of Public Servants in the state.
Speaking on Tuesday at the Grand Finale of the Year 2025 Head Of Service (HOS) Games held at Mobolaji Johnson Arena, Onikan, Lagos, the Deputy Governor added that it is the government’s priority to keep its workforce active and healthy, emphasising that initiatives like this play a vital role in supporting a balanced and productive public service.
His words: “We do this every year, the well-being, mental health, and stability of our staff is very important, doing this is imperative to us, it is important that we are active. It is essential that we are healthy. So it is a nice event that brings everybody together and allows people to compete in a friendly way, but also aggressively. It’s an interaction among various MDAs. All of them are civil servants.”
Speaking further, Hamzat stated that the Games have grown into a multi-category competition featuring football, tug of war, and other activities designed to foster teamwork, discipline, and healthy rivalry. “Beyond the excitement on the field, the initiative serves as a deliberate investment in social interaction between MDAs and overall productivity of the state’s workforce”.
He stressed that the annual Head of Service (HOS) Games remains a vital platform for mental wellness, healthy competition, and camaraderie among the state’s workforce, while reiterating that Lagos’ public service prides itself as one of the strongest public services in the country, urging the state’s civil servants to continue upholding excellence as other states strive to imitate them
He added that platforms like the ‘HOS Games’ remind workers that public service is not only about daily tasks, but also about staying active, building relationships, and strengthening the competitive mindset that drives better performance.
“We have the best public service in the country. So we cannot relax because others are also coming. So they must be the best in everything. You can see the competition, you can see everything we do. The essence is to make sure that it’s not just work, work. It’s also to ensure that people compete, even while they are working,” Hamzat concluded.
Earlier in his remarks, the Head of Service, Mr. Olabode Agoro, said the HOS Games was introduced in 2006 by the then Head of Service, Mr. Yakubu Balogun, to foster sportsmanship and camaraderie in the Lagos State Public Service.
He added that his office will continue to make the Games more engaging and exciting, noting that plans are underway to introduce an HOS Football League among government agencies.
