ILAMOYE GRAMMAR SCHOOL 1985 SET MARKS 40 YEARS WITH A LIFE-CHANGING MEDICAL RHAPSODY

In a heartfelt celebration of legacy and community impact, the Ilamoye Grammar School Old Students Association, Pioneer 1985 Set, marked their 40th anniversary with a remarkable medical outreach that brought free healthcare to residents of the Ilamoye/Okota axis of Lagos on Saturday 22nd November, 2025.

Partnering with the Nigerian Navy Reference Hospital, Ojo, the alumni staged what many beneficiaries described as a lifeline at a time when healthcare has become unreachable for the average person. The event delivered extensive medical check-ups, laboratory tests, dental care, eye examinations, hypertension management, free medications and even insecticide-treated mosquito nets at absolutely no cost.

From children to the elderly, beneficiaries expressed heartfelt gratitude for the opportunity to receive care many admitted they had been unable to afford for years. Full blood pressure checks, eye tests and the distribution of free eyeglasses drew some of the biggest smiles of the day.

Acting Commander of the Nigerian Navy Reference Hospital, Navy Captain O.A. Oyeneyin, who led the medical team, emphasized the importance of military-civilian partnership in community health. According to him, the collaboration with the alumni demonstrates the Navy’s commitment to supporting surrounding communities with quality healthcare and bridging the access gap for everyday Nigerians.

For the alumni, however, the medical rhapsody was just the beginning. Rear Admiral Joseph Daniel Akpan, alumni of the 1985 set and Chairman of the 40th Anniversary Local Organizing Committee, revealed a lineup of events that truly reflect the spirit of gratitude and remembrance. These include a Jumaat prayer, thanksgiving service, courtesy visits, a homecoming celebration at Ilamoye Grammar School, a visit to the family of the late Alhaji Lateef Kayode Jakande; champion of Lagos’ free education legacy and an alumni gala and awards night honouring outstanding old students and teachers.

Association President, Aileru Abiodun Ganiu, described the anniversary as a testament to unity, purpose and the power of giving back. He praised the turnout of old students, noting that the success of the medical outreach captured the heart of what the 1985 Set stands for which is service, community and lasting impact.

As the alumni prepare to round off their landmark celebrations, one thing is clear, the Class of ’85 has set a golden example of what it means to remember one’s roots and uplift the community that shaped them. Their 40-year milestone has transformed from a mere anniversary into a powerful movement of care, compassion and civic duty.
