The 40th anniversary celebrations of Ilamoye Grammar School’s Pioneer 1985 Set entered a new phase this week, as members of the alumni association returned to their alma mater in a full day engagement with students and staff.
Building on the momentum of their recent medical outreach, which was conducted in partnership with the Nigerian Navy Reference Hospital, Ojo, the alumni’s homecoming underscored a broader commitment to institutional development, community engagement and educational support.
Rear Admiral Joseph Daniel Akpan, Chairman of the Anniversary Committee, opened the event with a structured overview of the ongoing commemorations. He highlighted the Inter- faith services already held at both Christian and Muslim worship centers, emphasizing the alumni’s commitment to unity and continuity. He further outlined upcoming activities, describing the 40-year milestone as an opportunity to reaffirm shared values and strengthen the network that has defined the Class of 1985.
In her welcome address, Mrs. Oyenike Oyelade, Principal of Ilamoye Junior Grammar School, Okota, praised the alumni for their long standing culture of discipline, excellence and friendship. She noted that the 1985 Set has consistently demonstrated what strong alumni networks can achieve and encouraged current students to see them as models of resilience and aspiration. She said that their legacy remains visible in the school’s culture and she urged them to continue leveraging global exposure and professional success to advance the institution.
The Alumni Association President, Aileru Abiodun Ganiu reaffirmed the group’s commitment to supporting the school’s development priorities. He commended alumni members in the diaspora who participated virtually and acknowledged the presence of distinguished traditional rulers within the association, including the Baale of Mowe, Baale Osohunbi, and Oba Moshood Lawal. He described their attendance as a reflection of the alumni’s diverse accomplishments across sectors and leadership spheres.
One of the event’s most notable moments was the surprise arrival of a retired teacher, Mr. Peter Chikwe, who was flown in from Port Harcourt to mark the occasion. He received a guard of honor from the alumni and students, signifying deep respect for the teachers whose work shaped the early years of the institution. The emotional reception reinforced the enduring bond between educators and their former students.
The alumni capped the visit with an awards segment aimed at encouraging academic performance and character excellence. Students who distinguished themselves in various subjects and conduct received cash prizes and recognition in what organizers called a strategic investment in the future workforce.
