The Independent Newspapers Ltd., publishers of the Independent newspaper, is set for its 2026 annual awards which will coincide with its silver Jubilee anniversary.

The Chairman, Awards Committee of the organisation, Mr Yemi Adebisi, said at a media briefing in Lagos on Wednesday that the awards would feature 25 categories.

He said that each category would have three nominees.

He said that the categories would include business, governance and key sectors of the Nigerian economy.

Adebisi said that notable awards would include Man of the Year, Financial Sector Regulator of the Year, and Lifetime Achievement.

The chairman added that the annual ceremony would take place on April 18 at Eko Hotel and Suites, Lagos.

He said a significant departure from previous editions would be that members of the public would participate in the voting process.

According to Adebisi, the 2026 edition is the organisation’s Silver Jubilee edition as it coincides with 25 years of existence of the organisation.

Adebisi said that nominations would be assessed by a board of editors, an independent jury and respected Nigerians.

According to him, this is to ensure credibility, fairness and transparency.

He said that final shortlist would be publicly announced.

He said: “Nomination opens on Jan. 15 and it closes on Feb. 12. Shortlist announcement is on March 31, and public voting will be done from March 31 to April 14 while the awards ceremony takes place on April 18.

“Nominees will be assessed based on measurable impacts, innovation, leadership, sustainability, contribution to national development, and adherence to ethical standards.

“Nominees must be Nigerian citizens or organisations operating in Nigeria. Achievements must have occurred or had significant impact in 2025.

“Organisations must be duly registered and operational in Nigeria, while public officials must be currently serving or have served within the period,” he said.

The chairman said the event would have the theme: “Gamechangers, Breaking Barriers and Shaping Tomorrow”.

Adebisi urged media professionals to use their mediums to join in making the event a success. NAN
