The Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, has disclosed that the Federal Government is implementing a multi-layered security strategy to end the protracted violence in the North Central zone.
Addressing journalists in Makurdi , Benue on Wednesday, Akume revealed that President Bola Tinubu’s recent visit to Benue was part of a broader plan to restore stability, emphasizing that *“the Renewed Hope Agenda prioritizes the protection of lives above all else.”*
The SGF quoted Tinubu’s firm stance: *“The President’s directive is unambiguous: security agencies must apprehend perpetrators and prevent recurrence. This is not just rhetoric—we are mobilizing personnel, technology, and community intelligence.”*
He acknowledged challenges, however, noting: “Our security forces are overstretched, yet their dedication is unwavering. We are augmenting their efforts with improved logistics and inter-agency coordination”
Akume stressed that lasting peace requires synergy between federal and state actors: While the FG leads security operations, the Benue State government must galvanize local leaders. The governor must convene stakeholders—traditional institutions, NGOs, and opposition figures—to foster dialogue.”, he stated
He also highlighted humanitarian measures, revealing that over 50,000 IDPs need urgent support. We’re working with NEMA and NGOs to scale up aid.”.
While outlining plans for economic revitalization: he noted that “Military action alone is not enough. We are fast-tracking agricultural projects and youth employment schemes to curb crime triggers.”*
When pressed on timelines, he cautioned: *“Peace is a process, but with sustained effort, Benue will reclaim its prosperity.”
