The Labour party’s National Executive Council has held a meeting announcing that the presidential candidate of the party, Peter Obi and his running mate, Datti Baba-Ahmed have been pardoned after attending the Julius Abure led factional meeting in Asaba, Delta State, on the 18th of April.
Reading the communique, which was jointly signed by the party’s acting national chairman, Bashiru Lamidi Apapa and acting national secretary, Saleh Lawan, the national publicity secretary, Arabambi Abayomi, announced the pardon which also extended to other members of the party who attended the meeting, including the governor -elect of Abia state, Alex Otti.
Meanwhile, the suspension of twelve party members was highlighted for reasons termed as anti-party activities, issuing statements without the party’s authority and unruly behaviour. The suspended members include Obiora Ifo, Kenneth Okonkwo, Pastor Mrs. Adebayo Ekong, Com. P.G. Igene, Engr. Adeola Adebanjo, Pastor Funke Awolowo, Sam Emeka Okpala, Barr. Foluso Leigh, Folakemi Collins, Com. Olubunmi Adesanya, Lanre Adenuga and Dr. Olatubosun Oswald.
He blamed the attendees of the Asaba meeting on ignorance and said that they acted contemptuously against the restraining order of the Federal High Court.
The national executive council during the meeting expressed sympathy for Nigerians who are facing poverty, hunger, unemployment, insecurity, poor infrastructure and underdevelopment caused by leadership incompetence in the country.
The Labour party still expressed their belief in the rule of law and stands with their presidential candidate with a view of reclaiming their “stolen mandate” at the presidential election petition tribunal. It would be recalled that the FCT High Court had previously issued an order restraining Julius Abure from acting as the national chairman of the Labour Party on April 5th 2023.
