Lagos State Deputy Governor, Dr. Kadri Obafemi Hamzat, has reaffirmed the state government’s readiness to partner with the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) to enhance road safety across the state.
The Deputy Governor made this known on Tuesday during a courtesy visit by the Sector Commander of the FRSC, Lagos State Sector Command, Commander Kehinde Hamzat held at the Deputy Governor’s Office, Roundhouse, Alausa, Ikeja, briefing him on the problems encountering on the Lagos-Ibadan expressway that connects Lagos State with Ogun State, especially, Kara Long Bridge, with its peculiarity for creating traffic gridlocks.
Hamzat noted that deeper collaboration between the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) and the FRSC would significantly improve traffic flow and strengthen safety measures on Lagos roads.
According to him, “Let us collaborate and work together to make our roads safer. We will work with you to ensure that everything necessary is done. It is our responsibility to make road use safer and easier for our citizens.”
Hamzat further stressed the need for stronger cooperation between the Lagos and Ogun State governments to ensure the safety of the long bridge linking both states, noting that any disruption on the bridge directly impacts Lagos.
The Deputy Governor urged FRSC officers to maintain high levels of professionalism on the roads, adding that the indiscriminate parking of trailers along highways narrows the roads and endangers motorists. Clearing such obstructions, he said, would significantly reduce accidents.
Speaking further, Hamzat emphasized the need for transportation agencies within the state and the FRSC to enforce proper screening of trailer drivers, including mandatory eye tests, valid driver’s licenses, and full compliance with road safety regulations.
“A lot of these trailers pose a major threat on our roads. Their operations need closer monitoring. I have never seen a trailer driver in this country who uses recommended glasses, yet it is unlikely that they all have perfect eyesight. We must work together to ensure proper eye tests are conducted and compel their employers to certify their drivers appropriately,” he said.
Earlier in his remarks, the Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Commander Kehinde Hamzat, called for deeper collaboration between the transportation agencies of Lagos State and Ogun State to ensure a seamless flow of traffic and enhanced road safety across both corridors.
The sector Commander stressed that both states must work more closely to reduce road incidents and improve efficiency on shared routes. According to him, “Both states need to collaborate more, as our collaboration is not enough. What we need is a deep partnership because we have an initiative that rates us according to the number of casualties recorded annually.”
Responding to concerns over the persistent traffic gridlock at Opic in Ogun State, the Commandant reiterated the importance of a strengthened partnership, noting that only a coordinated, joint effort can provide a lasting solution to the challenges facing the axis.
The FRSC reaffirmed its commitment to working with relevant agencies in both states to improve safety standards, reduce casualties, and ensure smoother movement for all road users.
