In a remarkable show of corporate social responsibility (CSR), Welbeck Energy Distribution Limited, an independent power producer (IPP) based in Lagos, has taken a bold step toward urban renewal and public safety by donating 20 embedded automated solar-powered streetlights, reflective safety vests and a security booth to support the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) and Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA).
The installations, located at Stadium Under-Bridge in Surulere, were commissioned in the presence of government officials, community leaders, and security agencies.
Speaking at the event, Afolabi Aiyela, Managing Director/CEO of Welbeck Energy Distribution Limited, underscored the project’s alignment with sustainable energy goals. Aiyela explained that his company opted for solar power because it is renewable, self-sustaining and ensures continuous illumination for the safety of residents and commuters. He added that the initiative was inspired by the Honourable Member representing Surulere 1 Constituency, Desmond Olusola Elliott, who drew attention to the need for improved lighting and enhanced public security in the area.
Aiyela reaffirmed Welbeck’s commitment to maintaining the solar infrastructure and urged residents to protect the facilities from vandalism, emphasizing that community ownership and vigilance are key to sustainability.
Commending the initiative, Hon. Desmond Olusola Elliott described it as a timely intervention that would help address insecurity and boost nightlife and commerce in Surulere. He said the partnership shows that security is a shared responsibility. When corporate organizations contribute to public safety, everyone benefits, he added. Elliott also encouraged other companies to emulate Welbeck’s example by investing in community-driven CSR projects such as road rehabilitation, youth empowerment and healthcare support.
The event was graced by notable dignitaries, including the Lagos State Commissioner for Power, Hon. Abiodun Ogunleye, who lauded the project as a model for sustainable community engagement. He highlighted Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s commitment to an inclusive energy transition, with upcoming installations of over 40,000 solar-powered streetlights across schools, hospitals and public spaces statewide.
Also in attendance were the Chairman of Surulere Local Government, The Mayor of Surulere, Hon. Sulaimon Bamidele Yusuf, represented by Hon. Prince Dosunmu and other local government officials who praised the collaborative effort as a milestone in community-driven governance and sustainable development.
The commissioning at Stadium Under-Bridge not only illuminated the once-dark stretch but also symbolized a brighter path toward shared responsibility, renewable energy and a safer more vibrant Lagos.
