Healthcare delivery at the Military Hospital, Ikoyi, received a significant upgrade as the Nigerian Army Officers’ Wives Association (NAOWA) donated critical life saving medical equipment to the hospital’s Accident and Emergency Ward in Lagos.
The intervention was led by the NAOWA President and Wife of the Chief of Army Staff, Mrs Safiyyah Hassan Shaibu, who commissioned the newly donated equipment alongside the renovated Accident and Emergency Ward. The project formed part of activities marking the 2025 Chief of Army Staff Annual Conference, reinforcing NAOWA’s commitment to healthcare support for military personnel and the wider community.
Beyond the equipment donation, the association also carried out a facelift of the Accident and Emergency Ward, enhancing the facility’s capacity to deliver prompt and efficient emergency care. Following the commissioning, Mrs Shaibu undertook a guided tour of the hospital’s Accident and Emergency, Pediatrics and Gynaecology departments, underscoring NAOWA’s holistic interest in maternal and child healthcare as well as emergency services.
The donated equipment includes medium-size oxygen concentrators, multi-parameter patient monitors, manual suctioning machines, an autoclave sterilizing unit and an Automatic External Defibrillator. These additions are expected to significantly improve patient monitoring, emergency response and infection control, thereby accelerating recovery outcomes for patients receiving urgent care.
Hospital management described the donation as timely and impactful, noting that the new equipment will enhance the hospital’s ability to manage critically ill patients, closely monitor vital signs and provide faster intervention during medical emergencies. The inclusion of an autoclave sterilizing unit is also expected to streamline operations by enabling on-site sterilization of emergency equipment, reducing delays previously associated with off ward processing.
The Military Hospital, Ikoyi, remains one of the Nigerian Army’s reference hospitals, currently accommodating up to ten patients within its emergency unit. While acknowledging space limitations, hospital authorities highlighted the need for structural expansion to increase capacity and better meet growing healthcare demands, expressing optimism that future interventions would address these needs.
