In celebration of the Nigerian Navy’s 69th anniversary, the Eastern Naval Command welcomed civilians aboard the indigenously built Nigerian Navy Ship Oji (NNS Oji) for a symbolic sea voyage. A gesture underscoring the Navy’s growing bond with the public and its commitment to maritime security.
The event, flagged off by Rear Admiral DM Ndanusa on behalf of the Flag Officer Commanding, Rear Admiral SA Akinwande, showcased the capabilities of the Eastern Fleet, which includes frigates, patrol boats, helicopters, and surveillance drones which are all vital tools in the fight against maritime crime.
NNS Oji, a third generation Seaward Defence Boat built by the Nigerian Navy in Lagos, reflects the Navy’s progress in indigenous shipbuilding. Rear Admiral Ndanusa announced that construction of the 4th and 5th variants is underway, set for completion by the year’s end.
Guests witnessed the naval tradition of piping the side; a respectful salute between warships as part of the voyage. The event also echoed the Chief of Naval Staff’s directive to foster Civil-Military collaboration for safer seas and a stronger blue economy in line with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
A reception at the Eastern Naval Command Officers’ Mess capped off the day, celebrating not just the Navy’s history, but its forward looking vision for national security and economic growth.
