The Director of the Navy Affairs Department at the Ministry of Defence, Mr. Joel Adeoye has paid a familiarization visit to the Headquarters of the Western Naval Command (WNC) in Apapa, Lagos.
The visit, which held on Monday 18th August, 2025, brought a close meeting with the Director, Officers, Ratings and operational assets of the command. The visit was designed to deepen his understanding of the Navy’s working environment and to strengthen collaboration between the Ministry and the Service.
Welcoming the Director, the Flag Officer Commanding (FOC) Western Naval Command, Rear Admiral MG Oamen, painted a candid picture of the Command’s challenges. He highlighted pressing welfare issues such as inadequate staff transportation and accommodation, as well as critical operational concerns including shortages in POL (petrol, oil, and lubricants) and other logistics. Admiral Oamen expressed hope that the renewed synergy with the Ministry would translate into practical solutions for improved efficiency at sea and ashore.
In his remarks, Mr. Adeoye praised the resilience and dedication of the Command’s officers and men in safeguarding Nigeria’s maritime space despite evident constraints. He assured them that the Ministry of Defence remains committed to addressing their operational and welfare needs, noting that enhanced facilities and adequate equipment are priorities for the Navy’s future.
The visit also featured a guided tour of naval facilities and ships under the Western Fleet, giving the Director firsthand insight into both the assets available and the gaps requiring urgent attention.
Mr. Adeoye’s engagement underscored the Ministry’s intent to work more closely with the Nigerian Navy in tackling emerging security challenges across the nation’s maritime domain, reinforcing the Navy’s readiness and strengthening national security.
