The Navy Sailing Club has hosted an exciting event this weekend. The club organized a Boat Race, generously sponsored by The Commander NNS WEY, Commodore MM Braimah, Commanding Officer, Nigerian Naval Dockyard LTD and also Club Commodore, Captain AF Adewuyi, and Engr. Francis Olo, a member of the Navy Sailing Club.
The event, codenamed the BAO Boat Race( an acronym from the names Braimah, Adewuyi and Olo), drew enthusiasts and spectators alike to the Navy Sailing Club at Navy Town, Ojo Lagos.
The race activities kicked off with an opening speech and unveiling a boat renamed to honour the Flag Officer Commanding( Western Naval Command) Rear Admiral MB Hassan, by the Commanding Officer, Nigerian Naval Dockyard LTD and also the Club’s Commodore, Captain AF Adewuyi.
Captain Adewuyi said that naming the boat in Rear Admiral MB Hassan’s honour, was a mark of respect to him as the Patron of the Club, for his generosity and passion towards keeping their boats repaired, procurement of new rollers and ensuring boats that were aground are in working condition.
He also remarked on the essence of the BAO boat race as an event to develop athletes in boating activities locally at Lagos Yacht club and also internationally. He further called for further support from members individually and collectively to develop the Sailing club and its’ equipment for activities especially race boats. He promised that the races would be held annually and the BAO boat race was also part of the activities geared up towards the annual general meeting of the club, slated to hold the 30th and 31st of August, 2024.
The Flag Officer Commanding Western Naval Command Rear Admiral MB Hassan, was represented by Commodore Ogunleye.
The Commander NNS WEY, Commodore MM Braimah, spoke on the need to promote water sports with an event like the BOA boat race.
He also hailed the Flag Officer Commanding ( Western Naval Command) as being pivotal to the promotion of watersports and he said that about 6 to 7 months back, Rear Admiral MB Hassan, helped refurbish boats of the club and it was an honour to name one of the boats after him.
Commodore Braimah said he felt elated seeing that the event was successful and hitch free. He commended all participants in all the categories of swimming,
Kayaking and laser boat races and hoped the event would help foster better military- civilian relations.
Prizes were given to those who emerged tops in the races.
