The Minority Leader of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Ndudi Godwin Elumelu, and other outstanding Nigerians received the coveted National Honour on Tuesday, October 11, 2022, from the Federal Government in appreciation for their heroic contribution to our country.
Hon. Elumelu, who represents the Aniocha/Oshimili Federal Constituency in Delta State, was awarded the Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON) during the investiture ceremony conducted by President Muhammadu Buhari at the International Conference Center (ICC) Abuja for his meritorious contributions in a number of areas of national development.
Under the National Honours Act of 2004, which was established, the President is given the authority to recognise deserving Nigerian citizens and bestow honour upon them on behalf of the country in honour of their outstanding contributions to the advancement of both our country’s aspirations and the welfare of humanity.

The opposition leader, who is renowned for his courage in promoting good government and the defence of human rights, received the National Honours, and both Nigerians at home and in the Diaspora have continued to praise and applaud the decision.
Hon. Elumelu has received countless additional national and international honours, numerous traditional titles, and professional recognitions for his contributions to our country’s goals, and the OON award is one more to add to that list.
Hon. Elumelu has earned the respect and admiration of Nigerians, including his political rivals, for his tenacious efforts to firmly establish the Rule of Law, good administration, accountability, and social justice in the polity ever since the establishment of our current democratic regime.
Hon. Elumelu is a devout and humble politician who has served three terms in the House of Representatives. Prior to taking on the role of minority leader, he served as chairman of the power and health committees and as a member of the information, climate change, interior, water resources, science and technology, national security, and public safety committees.
He rose to fame when, in his capacity as the chairman of the House Committee on Power, he bravely supported important, constructive reforms that assisted in realigning the Sector.
His bravery in leading a system-wide investigation into the Power Sector in 2009 was essential in cleaning up the Sector. Additionally, it affirms him as a statesman who prioritised the interests of the country over all other factors.
Elumelu, who served as chairman of the committee on health, organised other leaders to establish the Legal Framework for the Regulation, Development, and Management of the National Health System, which revolutionised the industry and improved healthcare for millions of Nigerians.
As Minority Leader, he continues to fight tenaciously for the rights of the Nigerian people, particularly in light of his significant contributions to the creation of laws and the design of policies that aim to improve and empower the lives of the populace.
Hon. Elumelu is known for being one of the most active sponsors of legislation and resolutions that benefit the public. There is not a single week throughout the session that he does not introduce a motion or a bill that directly affects the welfare and advancement of the populace.
In addition to his exceptional economic upliftment of Nigerians, which is demonstrated by his extensive empowerment programmes, human capital investments, and infrastructure improvements in his Aniocha/Oshimili Federal Constituency in Delta State and in other States of the Federation.
According to reports, the Minority Leader was one of the 9th Assembly’s most effective lawmakers when it came to constituency initiatives. In his federal constituency and other constituencies, even in other States of the federation, he has completed development projects such as roads, schools, hospitals, agriculture, and energy projects, among others.
Through direct job placements, as well as his many employment and business possibilities and programmes, the data available indicates that he has empowered over 4000 Nigerians.
Without a doubt, Hon. Elumelu’s extensive education and personal discipline are what give him his leadership skills. He has a Masters of Business Administration from Ambrose Ali University, Ekpoma, a Bachelor of Science in Accounting from the same school, a National Diploma in Accounting from Yaba College of Technology, a Postgraduate Diploma in Organizational Leadership from Oxford University, and a Diploma in Contemporary Public Administration and Management from Galilee International Management Institute.

At addition to having completed a course in the University of Oxford’s Strategic Leadership Programme, he also possesses the prestigious Leadership and Best Practice Certificate from Harvard Business School, Boston.
