The Nigerian Army has issued a clarification regarding a recent incident that has generated widespread attention on social media, following claims that a civilian was shot and killed within the Ojo Military Cantonment in Lagos. The Army has firmly refuted these reports, urging the public to exercise restraint and verify information before circulation.
In a statement released by the Acting Deputy Director, Army Public Relations, 81 Division, Lieutenant Colonel Musa Yahaya, the Army explained that the incident did not occur within the Ojo Military Cantonment as widely reported. According to Yahaya, investigations revealed that the unfortunate event took place at a junction near the Mammy Market abattoir gate on 18th October 2025 and was linked to suspected cult-related activities.
The statement noted that troops from the Division’s standby team responded immediately after receiving a distress call. Upon arrival, the victim, identified as Rilwan Adekunle was found critically injured and was swiftly taken to the Ojo Cantonment Medical Centre, the nearest medical facility. Sadly, he was pronounced dead on arrival by medical personnel.
Lieutenant Colonel Yahaya expressed deep sadness over the loss of life and extended condolences to the family, friends and loved ones of the deceased. He further appealed to journalists and social media users to seek clarification from official sources before sharing unverified claims, emphasizing that such misinformation could cause unnecessary tension and public misunderstanding.
The Nigerian Army reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining peace, security and cooperation with communities around its formations, assuring residents of ongoing efforts to ensure a safe environment in Ojo and across Lagos State.
