As the Nigerian Navy marks its 69th anniversary, the Western Naval Command (WNC) launched a large-scale environmental sanitation exercise on Saturday, 24th May 2025, in Apapa, Lagos State. The initiative took place at Aremu Junction, Trailer Park, and Marine Beach, bringing together several stakeholders to promote a cleaner and healthier environment.
In collaboration with the Lagos State Ministry for the Environment, the exercise featured active participation from the Lagos State Waste Management Agency (LAWMA), the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps (KAI), the Lagos State Waste Water Management Office (LAWMO), the Office of Environmental Services, and the Office of Drainage Services.
Rear Admiral Michael Gregory Oamen, Flag Officer Commanding, Western Naval Command, stated that the exercise is a vital part of the Navy’s civil-military relations effort. He noted that it aligns with the strategic directive of the Chief of the Naval Staff, Vice Admiral EI Ogalla, Admiralty Medal, and reflects the Navy’s commitment to its host communities. He emphasized the Navy’s role as a stakeholder in Apapa and its support for the Lagos State Government’s goal of fostering a clean, business friendly environment.
Engr. Kunle Rotimi Akodu, Special Adviser to the Governor of Lagos State on Environment, commended the Nigerian Navy’s involvement and acknowledged the contributions of other agencies. He noted that the joint efforts signal a united front in addressing public hygiene and environmental sustainability across the state.
Also speaking at the event, the Chairman of Apapa Local Government, Honourable Idowu Adejumoke Senbanjo, expressed gratitude to the Nigerian Navy and urged other government bodies to follow suit in prioritizing environmental cleanliness in Apapa and beyond.
During the exercise, participants desilted drainage systems, cleared solid waste, and sensitized residents and traders on best practices in waste disposal. The effort has further deepened cooperation between military and civilian institutions, showcasing the value of cross-sector collaboration.
The sanitation campaign not only commemorates the Navy’s 69 years of service but also sets a precedent for future joint environmental initiatives in Lagos State.
