The Nigerian Navy has alerted the public about a surge in social media impersonation and recruitment scams.
According to a statement issued on Thursday, May 23rd, 2024, by the Director of Information for the Nigerian Navy,
Commodore Adams Aliu, fraudsters are impersonating the Chief of the Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ikechukwu Ogalla, on Facebook and other social media platforms to deceive unsuspecting citizens.
The Director Of Information, clarified that Vice Admiral Ogalla does not have a Facebook account and any such accounts are fraudulent and should be reported immediately.
Additionally, scammers are exploiting individuals seeking recruitment into the Nigerian Navy by charging substantial fees with false promises of enlistment.
Recent investigations uncovered that a suspect, Mrs. Grace Elijah, who was a part of a fraud syndicate, was arrested in Eleme LGA, Rivers State, for collecting N1,400,000 from 13 civilians, promising their participation in the Direct Short Service Commission (DSSC) 29 Selection Board Exercise.
She and other suspects have been handed over to the Nigeria Police for prosecution.
The Nigerian Navy emphasized that its’ recruitment process is free and conducted through official, well-publicized channels, including its official website.
Commodore Adams Aliu urged Nigerians to exercise caution and vigilance to avoid falling victim to these scams.
