NNPP WARNS PETER OBI AGAINST KWAKWANSO ALLIANCE AS 2027 ALIGNMENTS LOOMS

Speculation over a possible 2027 presidential alliance between former Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi and Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso has drawn sharp criticism from the leadership and members of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), who have described claims of Kwankwaso’s electoral strength in Kano State as exaggerated, deceptive and detached from current political realities.

In a statement released in Abuja, Dr. Agbo Major, National Chairman of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), dismissed reports of moves allegedly being championed by former President Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, GCFR, to forge a joint Obi–Kwankwaso ticket ahead of the February 2027 presidential election. According to the statement, the narrative that the Kwankwasiya movement could deliver one million votes in Kano State was largely imaginary and unsupported by present political alignments.

The party maintained that Senator Kwankwaso, once a dominant force in Kano politics, has suffered a steady erosion of influence following the exit of key allies and political lieutenants who previously powered his electoral machinery.

Prominent figures including Hon. Ali Madaki, Senator Sumaila Kawu, Hon. Alhassan Rurum, Hon. Rogo, Baffa Bichi, Senator Suleiman Hunkuyi, Prof. Alkali and Prof. Sam Angwe among others, have since defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
According to the NNPP, these defections were driven by internal grievances ranging from alleged high-handedness and lack of internal democracy to trust deficits and strategic miscalculations, developments the party says have significantly weakened the operational relevance of the Kwankwasiya movement in Kano State.

The party further argued that the assumption held by some political veterans, that only a combined Obi–Kwankwaso ticket could counter President Bola Ahmed Tinubu or former Vice President Atiku Abubakar in 2027, was fundamentally flawed. The statement noted that political arithmetic has changed, adding that past glories no longer translate automatically into future victories.

NNPP leaders also cautioned against any expectation that the party could serve as a fallback platform for either politician should they fail to secure tickets elsewhere, particularly within emerging coalitions. They reiterated that Senator Kwankwaso’s expulsion from the NNPP remains valid, citing 2025 judgements of the Abia State and Federal Capital Territory High Courts, which, according to the party, have not been successfully challenged.
Reflecting on the 2023 election cycle, the NNPP recalled that opportunities for collaboration between Obi and Kwankwaso had existed but collapsed due to what it described as mutual strategic errors and leadership misjudgements.

The party noted that greater internal consultation, particularly with NNPP founder and Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Dr. Boniface Aniebonam (Okechukwu), might have altered the outcome at the time.
On the current balance of power within the NNPP, the party reaffirmed that Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano State, as the highest ranking elected official on the platform, is the undisputed leader of the party’s political structure, alongside its’ elected National Assembly members.

In closing, the NNPP advised Peter Obi to exercise caution in any political engagement with Senator Kwankwaso, warning that such an alliance could risk reputational damage and internal disaffection within the Obedient Movement, whose support base the party noted, remains organic, value driven and sensitive to perceived political compromises.
