In a significant breakthrough in its ongoing mission to secure Nigeria’s maritime domain, the Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) BEECROFT has intercepted 19 suspected stowaways attempting to board Europe-bound vessels. This effort aligns with the Presidential initiative to strengthen the nation’s Blue Economy and eradicate maritime-related crimes.
According to a statement released by the Base Information Officer for NNS BEECROFT, Lieutenant Hussaini Ibrahim, interceptions were made by the Base’s Quick Response Team (QRT) deployed at Atlas Cove. On 19 December 2024, 15 stowaways were apprehended aboard the MT Kriti Ruby, while on 21 December, four more individuals were intercepted aboard the MT MCC Yanbu.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspects had boarded the vessels under the cover of darkness, hiding in the rudder compartments with the intention of illegally migrating to Europe. The MT Kriti Ruby alerted the Nigerian Navy Maritime Domain Awareness Facility via its Falcon Eye Alignment system, leading to the swift deployment of NNS BEECROFT’s QRT. The team intercepted the 15 stowaways near Lagos fairway buoy.
Similarly, the interception aboard the MT MCC Yanbu was facilitated by actionable intelligence provided by NNS BEECROFT personnel on escort duty. The swift actions of the QRT not only prevented potential security threats to the vessels but also safeguarded the stowaways from the life-threatening conditions they would have faced during the long voyage.
Stowaway activities remain a serious concern for maritime security, as they can facilitate smuggling, piracy, drug and human trafficking, and other criminal activities. Under the leadership of the Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ikechukwu Ogalla, NNS BEECROFT remains committed to ensuring the safety and security of Nigeria’s waterways, fostering an environment where economic activities can thrive.
The initial group of 15 stowaways has been handed over to the Nigeria Immigration Service, Lagos State Port/Marine Command in Apapa, for further investigation and appropriate action. The remaining four suspects will also be transferred shortly for similar processes.
The NNS BEECROFT continues to demonstrate its resolve to combat maritime threats, reinforcing Nigeria’s position as a key player in ensuring safety across the Gulf of Guinea.
