The closing ceremony of Operation Safe Domain III has been held on August 9, 2024, at the Naval Base Jetty in Cotonou, Benin Republic. This marked the end of the 5-day joint exercise aimed at securing the maritime domain in Zone E member states, though the operation itself will continue.

Commodore Aniedi Aniedu Ibok, Director of the Multinational Maritime Coordination Center, highlighted the operation’s successes and stressed the need for better communication systems and greater involvement of Maritime Operational Centers (MOCs) in future efforts. A conference is planned to improve interoperability among operators.

Captain I. Udoessien, Commanding Officer of DB ABUJA, noted the operation’s success despite communication and technical challenges. He recommended continued investment in advanced surveillance technology, stronger communication infrastructure, and regular joint exercises to bolster maritime security.

The operation effectively utilized assets from participating nations, including DB ABUJA, NNS KANO, BNS ALIBORI, and TNS AGOU. Key lessons included the importance of enhanced coordination, real-time intelligence, and early planning.

The ceremony concluded with gift presentations and group photos, underscoring the operation’s success and the commitment of Zone E member states to improving maritime security in the region.
