The Nigerian Air Force has recorded a major operational boost with the commissioning of the reactivated Super Puma helicopter, NAF 565, at 205 Rotary Wing, Ikeja, Lagos, on 4th February 2026. The milestone reinforces the Service’s expanding airpower capability and its focus on restoring key platforms to support counterinsurgency, maritime security and joint operations across the country.
In a statement released by the Director of Public Relations and Information, Headquarters Nigerian Air Force, Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, the reactivation was described as a clear outcome of sustained investments in fleet recovery and modernization under the current leadership. The statement added that the achievement aligns with the Federal Government’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which continues to drive tangible improvements in defence capabilities.
Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke, highlighted the Super Puma’s versatility in troop transport, medical evacuation, search and rescue, logistics and combat support missions, noting its’ strong record in operations such as Operation Hadin Kai. Its’ return to service is expected to significantly strengthen maritime security in Lagos while enhancing air support for security operations nationwide.
Beyond hardware upgrades, the Air Force leadership reaffirmed its commitment to personnel welfare as a cornerstone of operational effectiveness. Addressing officers and airmen at Sam Ethnan Air Force Base, the CAS outlined progress in aircraft serviceability, logistics coordination and the planned induction of advanced combat platforms, alongside accelerated housing projects and improved welfare packages to sustain morale and readiness.
