Former Labour Party presidential candidate in the 2023 general elections, Peter Obi, has donated ₦30 million to Dominican University, Ibadan, calling on Nigerian students to take responsibility for shaping the nation’s future.
The unannounced visit took place at the university’s Samonda Campus on Monday morning, as students prepared for their examinations. Obi, who has served as Pro-Chancellor of the institution for nearly ten years, used the opportunity to inspire young Nigerians with a message centered on leadership, productivity and national development.
Addressing students and faculty members, Obi highlighted the contradiction of Nigeria’s persistent food insecurity despite having over 60 percent of its arable land uncultivated. He emphasized that the era of heavy dependence on global systems is gradually fading and nations must now focus on grassroots development.
According to him, Nigeria’s challenges stem not from a lack of resources, but from deficits in leadership competence, capacity and compassion.
Obi encouraged students to see agriculture as Nigeria’s next major economic driver, often referred to as the new oil. He cited the Netherlands, a country comparable in size to Niger State, which generates over $130 billion annually from agricultural exports. He also referenced Israel’s success in food production despite limited landmass, stressing that knowledge and effective leadership drive sustainable development.
