The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has issued a statement debunking claims that it is responsible for issuing third-party insurance policies. The clarification comes amid allegations by some social media influencers and activists accusing the police of using the enforcement of the policy as a revenue-generating scheme.
In a statement signed by the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the NPF emphasized that third-party insurance is obtained solely through registered insurance companies, not the police. The police, however, have begun enforcing the policy effective February 1, 2025, in a bid to enhance road safety and protect the rights of accident victims.
The statement further cautioned social media influencers and activists against spreading misinformation about the insurance policy, stressing that inaccurate narratives could mislead the public and result in non-compliance with the law. The police urged all vehicle owners to ensure they have valid third-party insurance to avoid legal repercussions.
The NPF reiterated its commitment to enforcing the law while encouraging Nigerians to seek accurate information regarding mandatory insurance policies to ensure compliance and public safety.
