The Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria (PSN) is calling for increased investment in pharmacy education to strengthen the country’s healthcare system. The society made this appeal at its 2026 Pharmacy Colloquium in Yola, Adamawa State, emphasizing that a modern and well-funded pharmaceutical education system is crucial for national security and healthcare self-sufficiency.
The Governor of Adamawa State, Rt. Hon. Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, announced the establishment of a College of Pharmacy at Adamawa State University, Mubi, in support of the initiative. PSN President, Pharm. Ayuba Tanko Ibrahim, stressed that advancing the Doctor of Pharmacy programme and strengthening institutions like the National Postgraduate College of Pharmacy would reduce Nigeria’s dependence on imported medicines.
The society also highlighted the need for infrastructure support, protection of the Consultant Pharmacist cadre, and integration of emerging technologies into pharmacy education. The colloquium concluded with a call to action, emphasizing the importance of sustained investment in education, research, and local capacity development to build a globally competitive pharmaceutical sector.
