The West African Examinations Council (WAEC), Nigeria wishes to announce to
candidates, stakeholders, and the general public, that the result of the West
African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for Private
Candidates, 2023 FirstSeries, has been released.
The examination wasconducted in Nigeria between Tuesday, January 31,
2023, and Friday, February 17, 2
023.TheCoordinationofExaminersand
MarkingofCandidates’ScriptswerecarriedoutatThree(3) MarkingVenues
inIbadan,Enugu, andAbujafromWednesday,March 8,toThursday,March
23, 2023.AtotalofFour Hundred and Eighty-Seven(487)Examiners
participatedintheCoordinationandMarkingExercise.
EIGHT THOUSAND, SEVEN HUNDRED AND THIRTY-EIGHT (8,738)
candidates(representinga16% increase,whencomparedwiththe2022 entry
figure)enteredfortheexamination,whileEIGHT THOUSAND,THREE
HUNDRED AND FORTY-EIGHT(8,348)candidatessattheexaminationat
TWO HUNDRED AND SIXTY-TWO (262)centresspreadacrossthenooksand
cranniesofthecountry.
Amongstthecandidatesthatsattheexamination, TWENTY-SEVEN (27)
candidates,withvaryingdegreesofSpecialNeeds,wereregisteredforthe
examination.Outofthisnumber,EIGHT (8)werevisuallychallenged,TWO (2)
hadimpairedhearingandFOUR(4)wereAlbinos.Allthesecandidateswith
specialneedswereadequatelyprovidedforintheadministrationofthe
examination.
Ofthetotal number of EIGHT THOUSAND,THREE HUNDRED AND FORTY
EIGHT(8,348)candidatesthatsattheexamination,FOUR THOUSAND,ONE
HUNDRED AND SIXTY-ONE (4,161)weremaleswhileFOUR THOUSAND,
ONE HUNDRED AND EIGHT-SEVEN (4,187)werefemales,representing
49.84%and50.16%,respectively.Outofthetotalnumberofcandidatesthatsattheexamination,EIGHT
THOUSAND,TWO HUNDRED AND FIFTY-THREE(8,253)candidates,
representing98.87%havetheirresultsfullyprocessedandreleasedwhile
NINETY-FIVE(95)candidates,representing1.13%haveafewoftheirsubjects
stillbeingprocessedduetosomeerrorsonthepartofthecandidates.
However, efforts are being made to speedily complete the processing to enable
all the affected candidatesgettheirresultsfullyprocessedandreleased,
subsequently.
Theanalysisofthestatisticsoftheperformanceofcandidatesshowsthatout
oftheEIGHT THOUSAND,THREE HUNDRED AND FORTY-EIGHT(8,348)
candidatesthatsattheexamination:
TWO THOUSAND, NINE HUNDRED AND SIXTY(2,960)candidates
representing35.46%obtainedcreditandaboveinaminimumofFIVE
(5)subjects(withorwithoutEnglishLanguageand/orMathematics);
TWOTHOUSANDAND THREE (2,003)candidatesrepresenting23.99%
obtainedcreditandaboveinaminimumofFIVE (5)subjects,including
EnglishLanguageandMathematics
Of this number, NINE HUNDRED AND SEVENTY-ONE(971) i.e.,
48.48%weremalecandidates,whileONE THOUSAND AND THIRTY
TWO (1,032) i.e.51.52%werefemalecandidates.The percentage of
candidates in this category in the WASSCE for Private Candidates, 2021
and 2022–First Series, that is, those who obtained credit and above in a
minimum of five (5) subjects, including English Language and
Mathematics, were 30.11% and 26.32% respectively. Thus, there is a
marginal decreaseof 2.33% in performance in this regard.
This analysis, however,cannot be compared with that of the WASSCE for
School Candidates. Whereas the candidate in the WASSCE for School
Candidates Examination is compelled to sit eight or nine subjects, the
candidate in the WASSCE for Private Candidates Examination, though can
register for eight or nine subjects, is not compelled to take all. He/she is free to
sit, even one subject, depending on the deficiency he/she wants to remedy. For
him/her, therefore, the examination is only a remedial one –a remedy for an
existing deficiency. From the above, it will not be true or fair to say that the
performance in this examination has dwindled.
The results of FOUR HUNDRED AND THIRTEEN(413)candidates,
representing4.95%ofthetotalnumberofcandidatesthatsattheexamination,
arebeingwithheldinconnectionwithvariousreportedcasesofexamination
malpractice.Thecasesarebeinginvestigatedandreportsoftheinvestigations
willbepresentedtotheappropriateCommitteeoftheCouncilfordetermination
induecourse.TheCommittee’sdecisionswillbecommunicateddirectlytothe
affectedcandidates,thereafter.didateswhosattheexaminationshouldvisitwww.waecdirect.org to check
their results. Candidates will also be required to apply for their certificates
online, throughthe WAEC Certificate Request Portal (e-Certman) website:
https://certrequest.waec.ng/.All candidates who sat the diet are hereby
advised to check their results carefully and take necessary actions as required.
