On the 19th of October, at the celebration of the successful convening of the Global Leaders’ Meeting on Women held in Beijing, Uzezi Akinwoleola stood in tribute to a defining moment in diplomacy and women’s leadership. The event, hosted by the Consulate General of the People’s Republic of China in Lagos in collaboration with the Association of Chinese Women in Nigeria, took place at Lagos Palace Hotel, Ikeja. It gathered an inspiring mix of representatives from government, business, media, and public welfare sectors across both nations. Among the notable guests were Funke Oduwole, President of the International Women’s Society Nigeria, and Bolaji Cecilia Dada, Lagos State Commissioner for Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation.
On this remarkable occasion, Uzezi presented a specially crafted framed tribute to Yan Yuqing (严宇清), the first female Chinese Consul General in Lagos. The frame carried more than her image, it featured her Chinese name alongside three of her Nigerian names, Àyọ̀, Fátímát, and Ụ̀chè, representing joy, virtue, and wisdom across cultures. The crossed flags of China and Nigeria adorned the design, beautifully symbolizing diplomacy, unity, and friendship between both nations.
The moment was also one of gratitude and acknowledgment. Uzezi appreciated Dr. Ayodele Ogunsan, whose consistent leadership and bridge-building efforts have strengthened cultural and diplomatic ties between Nigeria and China. His quiet but enduring influence continues to open doors for meaningful collaborations that empower individuals and institutions alike.
Beyond artistry, the tribute held deep symbolism, a reflection of respect, shared identity, and enduring partnership. Uzezi highlighted Consul General Yan’s unwavering commitment to empowering women and widows, as well as her compassion toward the less privileged. One of Yan’s well-known guiding philosophies, “It is better to teach a person how to fish than to give her a fish,” resonated strongly with Uzezi. It aligns with the philosophy behind her work at AccompliTech Ltd, an edtech company dedicated to equipping people including women, with digital and technical skills that promote long-term empowerment rather than temporary aid.
The dialogue itself was both reflective and forward-looking. Participants explored how women’s inclusion strengthens society rather than competes with men, delving into ways to close the digital gender divide, expand women’s access to leadership, and design systems that promote sustainable empowerment. Within these conversations emerged a shared vision, a future where Nigeria–China collaboration supports women-in-tech programs, mentorship initiatives, and innovation projects that build smart and inclusive communities.
As the event drew to a close, one truth stood out; A message that leadership, compassion, and cross-cultural friendship can be nurtured through thoughtful gestures and shared purpose. And that women everywhere can stand as symbols of what becomes possible when we invest in education, technology, and dignity for all.
