Sani Zubairu, a 40-year-old trader, was charged on Wednesday in a Kaduna Chief Magistrates’ Court.
According to NAN, he was charged with stealing six bags of rice.
A two-count charge of criminal conspiracy and stealing is brought against Zubairu, who resides on Kano Road in Kaduna.
Inspector Chidi Leo, the prosecutor, informed the court that the defendant had committed the crime on October 12 at Kawo Market in Kaduna.
The complainant, Mamoud Ali, asked the defendant to assist him in watching over his shop while he went to the bank on the same date at around 2:00 p.m.
The prosecutor informed the court that the defendant conspired with two other individuals who are currently at large to steal six bags of rice from the store, valued at N252,000, while the complainant was away.
He claimed that the offense was against sections 234 and 271 of the 2017 Kaduna State Penal Code.
However, the defendant entered a not guilty plea to the accusations.
The defendant was granted bail in the amount of N100,000 with two sureties in the same amount by Magistrate Ibrahim Emmanuel.
Emmanuel stated that the sureties had to be employed for a living and provide proof that they had paid taxes to the Kaduna State Government for the previous two years.
The magistrate postponed the case until a hearing on November 16th.
