The West African Examinations Council (WAEC), Nigeria, has announced the release of results for the 2024 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for Private Candidates – Second Series. This year’s examination introduced a significant change, as it was conducted in two modes: the traditional Paper and Pen option and a newly introduced computer-based hybrid mode, allowing candidates to choose their preferred option during registration.
The examination was conducted between October 25 and December 20, 2024, across 5,067 centers nationwide. Marking of scripts took place in Lagos, Ibadan, Benin, Enugu, and Kaduna from January 15 to February 4, 2025, with 3,327 examiners participating.
A total of 68,342 candidates registered for the examination, marking a 20% decline from 2023. However, 65,023 candidates ultimately sat for the test. This included 157 candidates with special needs, such as visual impairment, hearing impairment, and albinism, all of whom were provided with necessary accommodations to ensure a fair examination process.
Out of the total number of candidates who sat for the exam, 62,354 (95.90%) had their results fully processed and released, while 2,669 (4.10%) are still awaiting full processing due to errors attributed to them. Efforts are ongoing to resolve these issues promptly.
Key performance statistics indicate that 43,923 candidates (67.55%) obtained credit or above in at least five subjects, regardless of whether they included English Language and Mathematics.
34,878 candidates (53.64%) secured credit or above in a minimum of five subjects, including English and Mathematics.
Among those who met the key requirement for tertiary education admission, 16,886 were male candidates (48.41%), while 17,992 were female candidates (51.58%).
This marks an improvement from the 2022 and 2023 results, where 42.16% and 44.29% of candidates, respectively, achieved this benchmark. The 2024 results reflect a notable 9.35% increase in performance compared to the previous year.
WAEC reported that 2,577 candidates (3.96%) had their results withheld due to alleged examination malpractice. These cases are under investigation, with affected candidates advised to visit the WAEC Notice of Examination Malpractice Portal for further steps. Final decisions will be made by the appropriate Council committee, and outcomes will be communicated directly to candidates.
Candidates can check their results online at www.waecdirect.org before accessing their digital certificates at www.waec.org. Those who wish to obtain hard copies of their certificates must apply via the WAEC Certificate Request Portal at https://certrequest.waec.ng.
