The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has issued an official statement in response to a widely circulated media report in which a distraught mother claimed that her son is slipping into depression over the Council’s refusal to release his Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE) result.
In the publication, the unnamed woman alleged that the Council was unjustly withholding her son’s WAEC certificate, leading to emotional distress and academic setbacks. The story has sparked public concern and sympathy, prompting WAEC to publicly address the matter.
In a statement released on Thursday by the Acting Head of Public Affairs, Moyosola Adesina (anipr), WAEC described the report as misleading and asserted that the Council does not withhold candidates’ results arbitrarily.WAEC emphasized that affected candidates are always notified of the allegations and are given the opportunity to present their case through the official WAEC Notice of Examination Malpractice portal; an online platform created to ensure transparency and due process. The Council noted that details about the portal are regularly disseminated via official press releases, social media platforms, and candidate briefing materials prior to every examination cycle.
WAEC maintained that it is a law abiding institution committed to fairness, integrity, and the rule of law. All reports of malpractice are handled in accordance with the established Rules and Regulations for Dealing with Cases of Irregularities, as stipulated by law.
The incident has once again brought to light the delicate balance between safeguarding the credibility of examinations and ensuring the mental well being of candidates undergoing investigation.
WAEC has urged the public to seek information from official channels and to avoid spreading misinformation that may undermine the integrity of the examination system.
