A grieving widow, Mrs. Adetutu Famuwagun, has issued a heartfelt appeal to the Lagos State Government and the Ministry of Justice to intervene in her harrowing battle to reclaim her legally purchased land. As a retired staff of the Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN), she had hoped to secure a peaceful future, but instead, she finds herself entangled in a relentless struggle against unscrupulous land grabbers.
The property in question, located at Better Days Estate, Gberigbe, Ikorodu, Lagos State, was acquired by Mrs. Famuwagun through what she believed to be a legitimate transaction. However, soon after finalizing the purchase, she discovered that the same land had been resold to another buyer, despite her visibly marking the property as her own. Rather than righting the wrong, the very family that sold the land to her demanded an additional N400,000, claiming it was compensation for a fence they erected. Under duress, she was coerced into making this payment.
What followed was a series of escalating intimidations and threats. Each time she attempted to access her property, she was met with hostility, further financial demands, and outright refusal to grant her possession. Hoping for justice, Mrs. Famuwagun sought redress through the Lagos State Ministry of Justice. But in a blatant display of impunity, the perpetrators ignored the Ministry’s mediation invitations on three separate occasions, further emboldened in their illegal actions.
Now, she lives in constant fear, as the land grabbers’ threats have escalated beyond mere intimidation to concerns for her personal safety. As a widow, she has no means to fight this battle alone and has exhausted every peaceful avenue available to her.
Mrs. Famuwagun’s plight highlights the urgent need for the Lagos State Government to intensify its crackdown on land grabbing, a menace that has left many legitimate landowners dispossessed and vulnerable. Her desperate plea is simple: justice and protection. She calls on Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, the Lagos State Ministry of Justice, and relevant authorities to step in before her last tangible hope; her rightful home is permanently taken from her.
