Lagos witnessed a groundbreaking healthcare movement on World Cancer Day 2025, as Phlox Health WASH Foundation, in collaboration with WASH 94.9 FM, the Medical Women Association of Nigeria, Pathfinder, and the Lagos State Primary Health Care Board, launched a Free HPV Vaccination and Cervical Cancer Screening Initiative. This transformative effort, themed “United by Unique,” underscores the power of collective action against cervical cancer—a preventable yet life-threatening disease.
The event, held at the Phlox Health WASH Foundation premises in Omole Phase 2, Lagos, brought together eminent medical professionals, public health advocates, and influential women leaders. Their shared mission: to raise awareness, provide free medical interventions, and advocate for expanded HPV vaccination programs across Nigeria.
Dr. Kemi Ogunyemi, Special Adviser to the Lagos State Governor on Health, delivered a compelling keynote address, highlighting the stark contrast in cervical cancer survival rates between Africa and high-income nations. She emphasized the urgent need for expanded access to vaccination, regular screenings, and enhanced research efforts to ensure no woman is left behind due to socio-economic constraints.
Renowned Oncologist Prof. Anthonia C. Sowunmi, Nigeria’s first female Associate Professor of Radiation & Clinical Oncology, educated attendees on the often-overlooked symptoms of cervical cancer, such as abnormal bleeding, foul-smelling discharge, and post-menopausal spotting. She stressed the importance of early detection and routine screenings, while also addressing common misconceptions that deter women from seeking medical help.
Prof. Sowunmi also tackled the social stigma surrounding cervical cancer, particularly the abandonment of women diagnosed with the disease. She made a passionate plea to men to support their partners, reinforcing the message that cervical cancer is not just a women’s issue, but a societal concern.
Dr. Adeniji Adebayo, Assistant Immunization Program Coordinator at the Lagos State Primary Health Care Board, provided crucial insights into the state’s ongoing HPV vaccination initiative, which commenced in 2023. He highlighted that free vaccinations are currently available for girls aged 9 to 14 at public health centers, general hospitals, and select private facilities, with discussions underway to include boys in the program.
Dr. Adebayo reassured attendees of the Gardasil 4 vaccine’s safety and effectiveness, emphasizing its role in preventing HPV-related diseases. He also stressed the importance of informed consent, ensuring that all immunizations are voluntary and well-understood by parents and guardians.
