In commemoration of United Nations World Drowning Prevention Day celebrated yearly on July 25th, the Nigerian Marine Coast Guards Volunteer Service (NMCGVS) brought to the fore challenges facing the agency, while they seek for support from government and other stakeholders to enable them carry out rescue operations effectively.
In his presentation, the Chief Commanding Officer of the agency, Captain Isaac Adamolekun said data collated since 2012 shows that many states in Nigeria are prone to flood disasters pointing out that, the Volunteer Service needs to put in more efforts towards rescuing people from drowning and aquatic predators.
There were different presentations on real life simulation of drowning, rescue
and medics. Some graduates from the NMCGVS also spoke on the vital roles of the agency as first respondent with search and rescue operations.
These practitioners expressed optimism to perform optimally if supported with the needed resources as they call on International organizations, The Nigeria governments and other stakeholders to key into their vision for expansion with provision of heavy equipment like jet skis, surfboards and other necessary tools.
